What Psychological Testing Child Custody Does For Children

By Carolyn Walker

Children need to be handled with care. What you say to a young child now and what someone does to them, will be remembered in their adult years. It will affect them and it will create an impact on their relationships, their emotions as well as in the way they behave. When parents are getting divorced, for example, one needs to look at psychological testing child custody.

Sometimes you will have problems with more serious disorders such as with abuse, for example. This can be a very sensitive issue for a child and it can affect them for the rest of their lives. This is why one has to find someone who specializes in trauma and who is kind and compassionate. They may be exposed to a court environment that is intimidating, so this is something to take into consideration.

Sometimes a court case will be about sexual abuse and the trauma that the child has suffered over the last couple of years. The father may be responsible for this and this is why the parents are getting divorced. This type of exposure can hurt the child. It is something that can affect them in years to come and this is why they need a psychologist who is especially trained for trauma.

Psychologists will work in different ways, depending on the personality and the age of the child. They may have to refer them to someone who is more specialized. A lot of kids work well with someone who is more practical in what they do. This can relate to a therapist who specializes in something creative or with play, for example.

There are also different methods that these therapists use, which is obviously important depending on the personality of the child. They may be more introverted, and in a case like this they may even be referred to a play therapist, for example. Here, they will learn to be more creative. The play therapist will be able to tell what is going on in the mind of someone like this.

A therapist may also need to test someone with words and pictures. Older children may have to take a written test and they will be able to see if there is a problem with the brain. Some kids need to be removed from the home because of a parent who has been drinking or because of an addict in the family.

This can relate to what the problem may be and the danger that they can cause the child, because it can cause immediate issues for them. This particularly applies in the case of physical abuse. The evaluator should definitely be aware of something like this when the other parent points something out, directing it at a stepparent. It is not something that you can ignore.

An evaluator will come into the home and interview all those who are concerned in the case. This can relate to someone who has been drinking or taking drugs. They may decide that the adult should go to a support group, even though they have been to rehab. Visiting the home from time to time is essential and a social worker should do this every so often.
