Some Facts Concerning Total Laser Resurfacing

By Laura Clark

Wrinkling and increased prominence of superficial lines are among the skin changes that occur in old age. The changes may also be seen due to some skin diseases or due to exposure to excessive sunlight leading to low self-esteem among some affect persons. One of the most commonly used interventions in Cincinnati is a procedure known as total laser resurfacing. The procedure not only reduces the number and prominence of wrinkles but gives the skin a more youthful appearance in general.

Having some background knowledge on wrinkle and superficial line formation will help use appreciate how this method works. Research has established that these conditions are caused by aging of collagen tissues found within the dermis layer of the skin. Collagen is a type of connective tissue that provides structural integrity to the entire skin. The idea of having resurfacing is to replace the aged collagen tissue with newer fibers.

When a laser beam is focused onto the dermis layer of the skin, it induces injury to collagen. In due course, the collagen regenerates with stronger fibers that give the skin a smoother texture. This typically happens within a few weeks. Although most people will exhibit positive results after one session, others may require two or more. In the event that there is a need to have the additional treatments, they are given at intervals of six weeks.

The treatment can be used by virtually anyone as no major contraindications exist. At the same time, there is not much in terms of preparation that is required. The procedure is invasive (minimally) and may cause a bit of bleeding. For this reason, one may be advised to stop taking any drugs that may increase the risk of this side effect. Aspirin, nicotine and blood thinners are all associated with an increased risk.

The procedure is typically done in the office or in the outpatient department of a hospital. A day case is a procedure that is done and one is allowed to home on the same day. Although the procedure is usually painless, there may be a need for light sedation or topical anesthesia if one has very sensitive skin. The whole procedure usually takes about an hour. Apart from the rapid results, there is also the benefit of fewer side effects.

The time needed for healing tends to vary. The main determinant is the depth of the peel. Generally, however, about 3 to 7 days are needed. One may experience some itching over the treated area but this will resolve within a few days. Some people may also may also notice reddening of the skin but this too normalizes in a few days. Persons with light skin tones are more likely to be affected by this problem.

While dressings are not always necessary, you may need some products to help with the recovery process. Hyper emollient creams and sun blocks are among the most useful. Antibiotics are also prescribed in some cases to keep potential infections at bay. If you are worried about the redness occurring in the first few days, make up will be helpful. For dark skinned persons that are affected by dark pigments bleaching is often done.

Laser resurfacing has continued to increase in demand in many places all over the world mainly due to its safety and effectiveness. As a potential client, what you need to know is that results are mainly dependent on the nature of your problem and its severity. You may require one or more sessions depending on your initial response.
