Understanding The Different Forms Of Cosmetic Anesthesia

By Brian Meyer

Cosmetic procedures are increasingly becoming popular more so due to new advancements and techniques coming up in plastic surgery. Prior to the procedure, a patient needs to first consider the sedation preferred by the surgeon. The surgeon uses the most appropriate cosmetic anesthesia, depending on the level of surgery. What is important is that a patient should not feel anything during the process. At the same time, different anesthetics can be used with the different types of plastic surgery.

First, local anesthetic is the most preferred for many plastic surgeries. This type of anesthetic is more suitable for minor bumps and lumps. It prevents pain in specific smaller areas. When used, the patient usually remains awake. This anesthetic is also used by doctors to numb a specific area before stitching, or dentists can use it when performing dental filling. Medications to reduce anxiety can be given to the anxious patients.

Another choice of anesthetic is the minimal sedation. This involves giving the patient an anxiety relieving agent together with some pain medication by mouth and it is usually done half an hour prior to the surgery. Some good local anesthetic is also used. With this form of sedation a patient is visibly relaxed or sleepy. It can be employed to perform small area liposuction, lip lifts, eyelifts and scar revisions.

Minimal IV sedation can also be used during plastic surgeries. The sedation is a step up from minimal sedation. It is suitable for those who want their comfort assured during the procedure. It is highly suitable for the too anxious patients.

IV sedation moderate or twilight anesthetic can also be used when performing cosmetic procedures. Together with this anesthetic, some drugs are given to help the patient forget the surgery process. It is also known as conscious sedation since the patient can breathe on his own although asleep. In case of pain, a patient can moan, verbalize or show some movements. It can be used for facelifts, breast reductions and facial implants.

A surgeon can also give a deep IV sedation when performing plastic surgery. Patients breathe on their own but they may require assistive devices. This form of anesthetic is suitable for major body lifts and plastic surgeries. With this anesthetic, the patient hardly feels pain or recall the procedure.

The last type of sedation that can be used for cosmetic procedures is the general anesthetic or sedation. With this type of anesthetic, the patient needs respiratory support. General anesthetic has known risks and problems. For instance, a patient may have nausea and prolonged recovery period. It may also increase the surgery time. However, nausea and prolonged recovery time are eliminated by IV sedation.

With the different sedation types outlined above, the more preferred form is the local anesthetic over general anesthetic. This is due to the fact that it is safer and has less risk as well as a short recovery time. Local anesthetics allow patients to be comfortable and relaxed during the whole procedure. Therefore, if you stay in Rome, GA, you can have cosmetic surgery with local anesthetics as opposed to general anesthetics.
