How A Plainfield IL Chiropractic Office Helps Scoliosis

The curvature of the spine caused by scoliosis can vary from slight to severe. The mildest case may be undetectable. Others might be serious enough to cause one side of the body to appear twisted. It usually develops as a child approaches puberty. In the adult, a Plainfield chiropractor may be able to use spinal adjustments to alleviate the pain.

Pain alleviation can sometimes be gained using chiropractic methods such as spinal adjustments. Here they are not moving the vertebrae, but, simply loosening and relaxing them. When tightened muscles are stretched, it can ease the pain. These are not applied excessively because that can aggravate arthritic joints. The curvature of the spine, however, cannot be straightened using chiropractic methods.

In some cases, scoliosis is caused by muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy. In others it is of idiopathic origin. Someone with this condition may turn to chiropractic care for pain relief as he or she grows older.

During your first meeting with the chiropractor a thorough evaluation of your spine is done to confirm your condition. Some symptoms are uneven shoulders or waist and one hip being higher than the other. The shoulder blades may not be the same size. The curvature can range from unnoticeable to pronounced.

A medical record is kept to document the findings of the evaluation. An x-ray may be taken or one taken by another health care professional is viewed. If a decision is reached indicating chiropractic methods of care will not help you, you will be informed. A suggestion will be made for you to turn to a different health care professional.

If it is an appropriate way to alleviate your pain, a series of office visits will be scheduled for the spinal adjustments. Your chiropractor can tell you which exercises might be appropriate for you to do at home. You can also ask about any sports activities that you should avoid due to the scoliosis. Although the curvature of your spine cannot be straightened, your pain can be reduced.
